Homemade Fabric Softener
Homemade Fabric Softener – just 3 ingredients & one of them is water! You probably already have everything you need to make this on hand too. Great to use daily or in a pinch too!
Ever since I posted my version of homemade laundry detergent, I have had many of you ask me for a homemade fabric softener recipe. How could I ignore such popular demand?
So, that brings us to this post today. I found via a recipe through Pinterest , and set to work to make up a batch. After the first batch, I tweaked the recipe just a little bit by reducing the amount of both water & white vinegar called for by 1/2 cup each. My results were soft clothes & towels, which was pretty great. White vinegar is like the all-purpose miracle agent for anything cleanly. I found that I got much more scent in my clothes when I added about 20 or so drops of essential oil to the mix – although, that’s just a personal preference & not a mandatory thing.
Here’s what you need:
Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl; whisk to combine.
If you want a good scent booster, add in several drops of the essential oil of your choice. {optional}
Pour into the container(s) you wish to store this in. I use an empty fabric softener container.
Use the same amount you’d normally use of store-bought fabric softener in the rinse cycle, or pour into a spritz bottle & spray on a wash cloth to throw into the dryer.

Is this safe for baby’s clothes?
I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be.
I Love your Ideahs and look forward to trying them out! Wonderful Web-page. You should put it into a Book at Kendal Direct Publishing . 🍀
Can I mix it into my homemade laundry detergent?
I really like that fact that you are trying to do ‘homemade’ stuff. However, I go from one ‘homemade’ item to the next. From dryer sheets to laundry detergent. Both of them use just re-purpose store bought stuff.
I’m sorry but this would only be homemade if you made the conditioner yourself.
Touché 😉
I’m just so thrilled that you love it as much as we do! And, we’re bad too a lot of times – afterall, everything is better with bacon 😉
Homemade? and Jess,
Just curious. Do you raise your on beef to make hamburgers or do you go to the grocery store and purchase it to make homemade hamburgers or chili? what about homemade vegetable soup? Do you raise your own vegetables from seeds that you saved from last years harvest or do you repurpose ones from the grocery store or farmers market? Seems to me like everything we do is repurposing something. Oh just what about homemade desserts like pie or cake? Do you grind your on flour from the grain you raised and the lard you rendered from your own animals you butchered in your back yard or do you repurpose what you purchase in the grocery store.
I just found this website and I am enjoying making all these “homemade” things. My son told me I don’t have to do all that but I told him I am enjoying it. Thanks for the recipes and tips. LOVE it.
is this safe to use with front loading washers that take only HE liquids??
Yes, it is!

I just cut the store bought with the same amount of vinegar.
Wow, this something I gotta try ASAP! I’ve got soooo many bottles of hair conditioner. Thanx for this. I’ll try my best to post my results.
Can you use the Dollar Store bottle of hair conditioner? Or should it be a specific brand? Love the idea of homemade dryer sheets where I can actually choose the fragrance.

I noticed you threw the used drier sheet back into the drier; will it soften two loads or more?
Note that vinegar disinfects your laundry load and will protect your washing machine from calcium. You can if in a rush just use pure vinegar as softener. Vinegar also protects the colors of your cloths.
