Football Bread Bowl with Taco Dip

This Football Bread Bowl with Taco Dip looks just like a football – and it’s so yummy!  The football bread bowl itself is compiled of nothing but 3 tubes of french bread dough.  You can fill it with any dip you like, but I prefer a simple homemade taco dip because not only is it delicious as all get out – but it’s the perfect color to complete your ‘football’! It is destined to be the star recipe of your Super Bowl or football party!

The recipe I’m gonna share with you today is destined to be the star of your Super Bowl party table. It’s so cool & so yummy that there just isn’t any way that it possibly wouldn’t be the star of the show.   Heck, it may even outshine those awesomely funny Super Bowl commercials that I love so much – you know, the only reason I watch the Super Bowl in the first place. 😉

This bread bowl is simple as can be to make – and it looks like a football!  You can fill it with any dip that you like, but I went with an easy taco dip because the brown color made it perfect for the whole football theme I was going for.

If you can unroll a can of dough, you can do this.  Trust me on this!

To make the football bread bowl, all you need is 3 cans of french bread dough – and a little egg wash.  That’s it! Unroll one can of the dough into a flat layer, and place it on a large baking sheet. Then, open up the other 2 cans of french bread dough, leave them whole, and place them on the baking sheet like so to form your football.

Use a knife or pizza cutter, and cut the overhanging dough off – reserving it to make your football laces & stitching.

Cut 2 strips for the stitching & put them in place on each side of the ‘football’.  Make your laces with the reserved dough as well, and place it on the baking sheet so it can cook too.

Mix an egg with a splash of water, & brush it over all the dough.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes, or until the bread is nicely browned.

Meanwhile, while the football bread bowl is baking, make your taco dip (if you’re filling your bread bowl with taco dip – feel free to use any dip you’d like!).  The taco dip makes enough to fill this bowl twice – so half it if you only want to make enough to fill the bowl once!

Brown 1 pound of ground beef with 1 packet of taco seasoning in a skillet.  Drain off any grease that accumulates.  Mix in 1/2 cup of chopped tomatoes, 1 can of refried beans, 1 can of diced green chiles, & 2 tablespoons of garlic powder. Cook on medium for about 10 minutes.

Stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, & cook on medium heat until melted & combined.

Football Bread Bowl with Taco Dip

Scoop half of the taco dip into your football bread bowl, and place the bread laces right in the middle.

Isn’t this awesome?   🙂

Football Bread Bowl with Taco Dip

Ingredients

  • 3 cans refrigerated french bread dough
  • 1 egg plus a splash of water
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • 1 14 oz can refried beans
  • 1 4 oz can diced green chiles
  • 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Unroll one of the cans of refrigerated french bread dough & lay flay on a large baking sheet that you've sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Place the other two whole loafs of french bread dough on top of it in slightly curved positions, opposite of each other, to form a football shape. Cut off the excess dough on the bottom, and reserve. Use the excess dough to form the laces & stitching on the football (refer to pictures in post). Brush with the egg wash. Bake for 25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown.
  • Meanwhile, make the taco dip. Brown 1 pound of ground beef along with 1 packet of taco seasoning. Once browned, drain any excess grease. Stir in the refried beans, green chiles, tomatoes, & garlic powder. Cook on medium heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mix in the cheddar cheese, & cook until melted & thoroughly combined.
  • Scoop half the dip into the bread bowl & top with the bread laces to complete. The taco dip makes enough to fill the bowl twice, cut the recipe in half if you just want enough to fill it once.
