3-2-1 Microwave Mug Cake
This mug cake is dangerous. Sweet, warm cake ready in just a minute – any time you want it. It’s low cal (clocking in at about 80 calories) so you don’t have to feel too guilty about indulging , which just makes it even better. And I don’t feel so bad about drizzling a little warm caramel sauce on top either. Or chocolate chips. Or whipped cream. Or ice cream. Or sweetened condensed milk… oh man, now that sounds good. I have a secret love affair with sweetened condensed milk.
You only need 2 ingredients. 1 box of angel food cake mix & one box of the flavor of your choice. I chose devil’s food cake mix as my second because it has chocolate… chocolate & I go way back. The other box has to be angel food cake mix, or this recipe won’t work.
Simply combine the 2 cake mixes together. I put mine in a gallon sized ziploc bag, & give it a good shake – and that’s where I store it at too.
To make each mug cake, stir together 3 tablespoons of mix with 2 tablespoons water using a fork.
Microwave for 1 minute. And, that’s it.
Eat as is – or top with whatever toppings you choose. (note from the Mrs: sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, & whipped cream. You know you wanna)
Q: wouldn’t the silver trim on your tea cup spark/burn in the microwave? That used to happen to me years ago when I’d forget and I ruined several gold-trimmed teacups this way. Maybe microwaves have changed over the years and this no longer happens?
This simple cake idea ended up being delicious! I picked out the same flavor you did- chocolate! I did have a question…did you use the egg white mix from the angel food cake mix? I didn’t …now I don’t know what to use it for. I don’t want to throw it out. Any ideas? I don’t want to bake an angel food cake.
I actually added the egg white mix into the mix as well 🙂 I’m so glad you liked the mug cake though!!
Hey, I am trying to figure out how this is 80 cals? According to My fitness pal, The angel food cake mix is 3 cups dry mix( 48 TBSP, 1,680 cals in total) so that = 35 cal pr TBSP and there is 1.5 so that = 52.5. The devils food is 1800 per box and about the same size(from what my fitness pal says) that makes 1800/48TBSp = 37.5 * 1.5 = 56.2.
56.2 + 52.5 = 108 cals.
OR
1box angel food (1,680) + 1 box devils food(1,800) 3480/ 96 TBSP = 36.2 + 3TBS per cake = 108.75
If you think something is wrong(maybe my fitness pal is off on the mix size, I will stop at Aldi to verify), please let me know. If not, be aware off the extra 28 cal per serving if you are counting!! – Or make a mini mug cake at half size!!
Also…. tasted great.
I just used a box of fat free Angel Food and a box of reduced sugar Devil’s Food (50% less sugar) and it tasted great! After the cake was done I added a tablespoon of mini chocolate chips on top and let them melt.

how many mugs would this fill (for gifts) ?
This recipe fills one mug per batch!
I have been making this cake for a couple years now. It is very quick and delicious.
I use the Angel Food cake and what ever other I have on hand.
I also add about a tsp of cinnamon to the mix. just adds a little more to the taste.
Great snack!
P.S.
Also I will often double it….6-4-2
Works great!
Why does it have to be a mix of 2 cakes? Won’t the devil’s food work alone? Or is it a matter of taste? Looking forward to try it out!
Sadly it doesn’t work without the angel food cake mix – but I’m not sure of the science behind it. You can switch out the other cake mix with any flavor though to custom make different microwave cakes.
you need the rising action and binding from the egg whites in the angel food cake mix.
I’ve been known to mix brownie mix & coffee together for my mug cakes. Can you say instant (okay… a couple of minutes) gratification?! Yumm!
I read somewhere you should use the Angel Food cake mix that you just add water
has anyone tried brownie mix with this?
