MawMaw’s $3 Buck Cookies

My MawMaw was really frugal, & she came up with these super simple cookies. She called them $3 Buck Cookies since they only cost that much to make a batch!

Today is one of those days that I love so much because I’m going to share another recipe from my family.  This one is my MawMaw Light’s recipe – but it’s so super simple, I almost hesitate to refer to it as a recipe.  Also, even though my MawMaw is a fantastic cook & made nearly everything from scratch – this is not from scratch.  But it IS yummy!  And cheap at that.  They’re called ‘$3 Buck Cookies’ after all…. which means it costs $3 to make a whole batch of them.  Bucks as is dollar bills… not male deer. 😉

MawMaw Light is my only grandmother who is still living.  Her husband, my PawPaw Buddy, has been deceased for several years now – so she doesn’t do much cooking anymore.  But, I will always remember what fantastic meals she made.

My grandparents were really frugal individuals. MawMaw would save the empty cool whip containers for bowls, empty tin pie plates for toaster oven baking trays, & rarely ever turned on the lights in her house.  PawPaw was kind of funny with his frugal ways. I remember he started having issues with his socks staying up on his legs.  Instead of purchasing new socks that fit his legs better, he duct taped his socks to his legs.  No joke! It still makes me giggle when I think back at that site!

$3 Buck Cookies

MawMaw made up this recipe when I was little. She called them $3 cookies because as I mentioned before, they only cost $3 whole dollars to make up a whole batch of them. They may be a little higher now, maybe $5 with today’s prices & depending on where you live – but I refuse to change the name.  This is what I grew up calling them, so the name definitely stays!

They take just minutes to make a batch, but only make as many as you’re going to eat within about an hour or so.  We’ve always just made a few at a time since they’re so fast & easy.

Here’s what you need.  You only need these 3 ingredients, but sometimes we’d go an extra step by adding a cherry to the middle. Totally up to you!

Take out however many iced oatmeal cookies from the package that you’re going to be eating. Spread them with a layer of Cool Whip.

Now sprinkle them with shredded sweetened coconut.  If you don’t like coconut, you could still make them by using chocolate chips or something like that.  You could even put chocolate chips on top of the coconut if you like both.

All done!

Unless you want to go an extra step and add a cherry to the middle.  I think it makes it prettier, don’t you? 🙂
