Country Style Baked Beans

What’s a good summer barbecue without baked beans?

Today, I want to share with y’all my recipe for a pan of delicious baked beans. This is my favorite recipe!

Side note: if you don’t like bacon, you might as well turn back now.

Or, continue on and just don’t add the bacon… (oh, the horror!) or use less of it.

Me and bacon though… see, we have a very close and personal relationship with each other. I like my bacon like I like my cheese… a week’s allowance all at once. 😉

These country style baked beans are the perfect blend of sweet, savory, and spicy. The bacon takes care of the salty while contributing a little bit of crunch factor. My, oh my. They are so good.

Ingredients for Country Style Baked Beans

  • Bacon: Bacon adds a smoky flavor to the beans and a nice texture.
  • Yellow Onion (chopped): Yellow onions add a mild, sweet flavor to the baked beans. You can use white onions or even red onions if that’s allyou have on hand though.
  • Jalapeños (minced): Jalapeños give the beans a bit of heat. If you prefer a milder taste, remove the seeds or skip them altogether.
  • Garlic (minced): If you don’t have fresh garlic, garlic powder can be used, but fresh is best.
  • Mixed Beans (2 cans, drained and rinsed): I use a blend of beans, each lending their own flavor while creating a beautiful marriage with the other flavors that are happening. You can substitute with any beans you like, such as black beans or navy beans.
  • Baked Beans: Baked beans bring sweetness and a rich sauce.
  • Red Kidney Beans (drained and rinsed): These beans are firm and hold their shape well. If you don’t have kidney beans, you can substitute with black beans or more pinto beans.
  • Ketchup: Ketchup adds tangy sweetness. You can also use BBQ sauce for a smokier flavor if you prefer.
  • Molasses: If you don’t have molasses, honey or maple syrup can be a substitute, though the flavor will be slightly different.
  • Hot Sauce: A little hot sauce gives the dish a bit of a kick. You can leave it out if you don’t want the added heat.
  • Brown Sugar: Brown sugar adds a sweet and slightly caramel flavor to the beans.
  • Coarse Ground Black Pepper: Black pepper adds a little spice and enhances all the other flavors.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: This adds a savory, slightly tangy flavor to the dish.
  • Yellow Mustard: Yellow mustard brings tang and a little bit of sharpness to balance the sweetness. Dijon mustard or spicy brown mustard can be used as a substitute.
  • Salt (to taste): Salt enhances the overall flavor of the dish. You can adjust the amount based on your preference.

How To Make Country Style Baked Beans

  1. Get the oven ready: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Cook the bacon: In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium-high heat until crispy. Once done, remove the bacon and place it on paper towels to drain. Crumble the bacon and set it aside for later.
  3. Sauté the onion: Drain half of the bacon grease from the skillet. Add the chopped yellow onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes until it starts to caramelize.
  4. Add jalapeños and garlic: Stir in the minced jalapeños and garlic.  Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the garlic smells amazing.
  5. Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the onions with half of the crumbled bacon. Add the all the beans and other ingredients. Stir everything well to combine.
  6. Bake the beans: Pour the bean mixture into a 9×13 baking dish. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for one hour.
  7. Add bacon and finish baking: After one hour, uncover the dish and sprinkle the remaining crumbled bacon on top. Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, uncovered.
  8. Serve: Once done, remove the baked beans from the oven, let them cool for a few minutes, and serve warm. Enjoy!

Note: I add half the bacon to the beans and mix it in, and then I add the other half sprinkled over the top near the end of cooking time.

I really like the crunch that it adds to the top.

If you don’t want any crunch on them, you can mix all the bacon with the baked beans before cooking. But, if you’re like me and like that crispy bacon factor on top… then save some for the end, baby.
