As soon as the weather starts getting chilly – or whenever I am craving good old comfort food – I pull out the crockpot to make this easy slow cooker recipe.
I’m a busy mom and I’m always on the go, and there’s nothing I love more than coming home to a meal that’s pretty much ready to eat. Hot, hearty, meaty, saucy, and delicious, y’all, this dish is some of the best eating! And there’s no chicken gravy mix in this recipe, just amazing flavors from a few common ingredients.
The best part is that you load it all into the crockpot and then let it do its thing! It’s like magic when I step into the house and smell the amazing aromas of this chicken dish!
Are you ready for some good ole Southern comfort food? Let’s dig in!
Ingredients
- Chicken breast – You can use bone-in breasts, but use boneless and skinless chicken breasts to make this dish super-easy.
- Onion soup mix – Yup, 1 package will add so much flavor!
- Cream of chicken soup – One can is all you need, but don’t dilute it.
- Chicken broth – I use low or no-sodium added chicken broth.
- Water
- Black pepper – Freshly ground if you have it.
- All-purpose flour – This will help thicken the gravy.
- Garlic powder – The gravy needs a bit more flavor!
- Poultry seasoning – Use your favorite brand.
How To Make This Crockpot Chicken and Gravy Recipe
- Add the chicken breasts to the bottom of a crockpot at least 3 quarts in size.
- Combine the onion soup mix, cream of chicken soup, chicken broth, water, black pepper, flour, garlic powder, and poultry seasoning. Whisk it together well so that it’s well combined and smooth.
- Pour the mixture over the chicken breasts in your crockpot.
- Cook on low for 6-8 hours or until the chicken is done.
- Remove chicken from the pot, shred with a fork, and return to the gravy.
- Check for seasoning. I find that there’s already a fair bit of salt in this dish, but you can adjust it to your taste.Â
- Serve and enjoy!
Serving Suggestions
This slow cooker chicken and gravy recipe makes the best darn gravy around, and I’m all about the gravy! Y’all, this is some mighty fine gravy. Make sure to serve your chicken and gravy with mashed potatoes, biscuits, rice, or something else to sop up all that delish gravy.
Growing up, when there was gravy, there was bread. The bread wasn’t just food in our house, it was a dining utensil. I mean, how else are you supposed to get all that yummy gravy off your plate? Gotta have you some bread!

Recipe Tips
- Making this crock pot chicken recipe from scratch means that you can easily double this recipe if your crockpot or slow cooker is large enough.
- Try boneless skinless chicken thighs instead of breasts to change it up.
- Use boneless skinless chicken breasts to make it easy, otherwise, you’ll have to pull the chicken off the bone before serving.
- I like to shred the chicken and then put the shredded chicken back into the gravy, but you can also slice it or serve it whole.
Storage Instructions
This is such an easy Crockpot Chicken and Gravy recipe, and there are rarely any leftovers in my house. If you have leftovers, store the chicken and the gravy in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
You can also freeze leftovers in a freezer-safe container or plastic bag for up to 3 months. Just pack the chicken in the gravy to keep it moist.
