This is another one of my MawMaw’s recipes, and her recipes are always amazing! I love this apple pie recipe, not just because of the memories associated with it, but because it is easy and delicious.

Apple pie can be tricky to make, but this recipe is foolproof! It cooks faster than regular pies, there’s no fussing with finicky pastry, and it is, by far, the simplest homemade apple pie recipe. Perfect in the fall when local apples are in season or anytime during the year, whenever you’re in the mood for a slice of just-from-the-oven apple pie, this Shredded Apple Pie recipe is the one to turn to!

Why Make Shredded Apple Pie?

The secret to this recipe is in how you treat the apples. You get way more apples into the pie by shredding the apples, resulting in much more apple flavor. Adding an egg helps the apples set up when baking, and I’m sure that after just one bite, you’ll be convinced that grating the apples first is the way to go! I also find this preparation a lot simpler than most other apple pies.

Ingredients

  • Frozen pie crust – Keep it frozen until you’re ready to fill it and bake it.
  • Peeled and grated apples – See my suggestions below.
  • Butter – Or margarine.
  • Egg – Just one egg; beaten.
  • Sugar – White granulated sugar.
  • Vanilla extract – Pure or artificial extract is fine.
  • Cinnamon – Or apple pie spice.

What Are The Best Apples For Apple Pie?

I love using Granny Smith apples for this recipe because they are tart and firm, and when mixed with the sugar, they’re not too sweet. You can use just about any apple in this recipe, but I’d suggest staying with tarter apples vs. sweeter apples. Honeycrisp, Jonagold, and Gala apples are also good picks. Just peel and shred enough apples to fill the pie crust.

How to Make Shredded Apple Pie

This apple pie recipe couldn’t be any easier, and there are just a few steps!

  1. Preheat your oven to 350-F.
  2. Add the peeled and shredded apples to the frozen pie crust.
  3. Mix the egg, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and cinnamon in a bowl. Pour this over the grated apples.
  4. Bake for 60-70 minutes or until the pie is set and the apples are golden brown.
  5. Check the pie after about 40 minutes and cover with foil if the top is getting too brown.
  6. Cool the pie before cutting and serving.

What Happens If Your Apple Pie Crust Gets Too Brown?

This is an easy pie to bake, but the top can get too brown. To avoid getting the top too brown, keep the pie on the middle rack in the oven. Check the pie after about 40 minutes and cover the whole top with tented foil if it starts to get too brown. The foil will keep it from getting too dark.

Serving Suggestions

Love apple pie a la mode? That’s apple pie with a scoop of ice cream with it. I love slightly warm apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The cold, creamy ice cream and warm apples pair so deliciously together! You can also serve this apple pie with sweetened whipped cream or add some thinly sliced cheddar cheese to the top of the warm apple pie. The sharp, salty flavor of the cheese pairs so nicely with the warm, buttery apples! I also love a drizzle of caramel sauce with this homemade apple pie.

Recipe Tips

  • Don’t worry about blind baking the pie shell first. The crust will cook as the pie cooks.
  • Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any spillover.
  • Use a box grater to shred the apples coarsely.
  • If the pie starts to get too broil.
  • Cool the pie before cutting to keep the filling from oozing out everywhere.

Variations

This Shredded Apple Pie recipe is so forgiving, and it can be jazzed up in a variety of ways. I love adding half a cup of chopped pecans or walnuts to the apples to add a nutty crunch. And while I already think that this is the best Shredded Apple Pie recipe, you can also add a handful of yellow raisins to the apples for a touch more sweetness.

Storage

Keep any leftover Shredded Apple pie in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
