Creamy Gouda & Garlic Potatoes Au Gratin
I love starch.
I love cheese.
I love garlic.
And, I LOVE these potatoes. I CRAVE these potatoes. Creamy, cheesy, garlic-y perfection.
I also love my husband, but I will so stab his hand with my fork if he tries taking a bite off of my plate. I’m all for sharing…but that’s pushing it.
But, I will share my recipe with y’all so that you can see for yourself what I’m going on & on about. You just have to try these. It just wouldn’t be right if you didn’t.
Creamy Gouda & Garlic Potatoes Au Gratin
Ingredients
- 3 pounds red potatoes washed – sliced thin (skin on)
- 7 ounces Gouda cheese shredded & divided
- half a stick of butter
- 8-10 cloves of garlic minced
- 1.5 cups heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9x13 baking dish. Melt the butter in a small pan & toss in the minced garlic. Saute until nicely browned & fragrant.
- Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle half of the Gouda cheese on top. Top with the other half of the sliced potatoes. Pour on the butter garlic mixture.
- Combine the heavy cream with the salt & pepper & pour on top of the potatoes. Sprinkle the rest of the Gouda cheese on top.
- Bake for 75 minutes - serve immediately.

I actually had shredded Gouda cheese in the frig and was looking for a recipe to use it when I found yours. I made it this evening, only cut the size down by about a third to a 9×9″ pan. This stuff is heavenly! I’m having to fight myself not to have a third helping. There is no redeeming health benefit (due to the high fat content) but definitely a keeper that I’ll fix on major holidays or special occasions. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe with us!
Can you use milk instead of heavy cream?
No, not in this recipe.
