Christmas Trifle
It was right around Christmas time last year when I got this wild idea to make a Christmas trifle using Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes.
I was standing in the kitchen, staring at a box of Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes that I’d picked up at the grocery store.
Those cute little cakes always remind me of the holiday season!
I make all sorts of awesome treats with them, like: Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake Dessert, Christmas Tree Snack Cakes, Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cheesecake, and my Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake Dip.
So, yes, I guess you can say I am a tad obsessed with Little Debbie, especially during the holidays!
Now, my family loves a good trifle dessert. You know, those pretty layered desserts that sit in a big trifle bowl and make your holiday table look fancy?
I figured, why not mix those cakes with some fresh berries, creamy goodness, and a little holiday sparkle?
Trifles are fun to make because they’re typically simple to throw together, and this one is no exception.
Who knew a box of store-bought cakes could lead to the best holiday trifle ever?
So, if you’re looking for an easy recipe to wow your family this holiday season, this one’s it. It’s perfect for a Christmas party (the kids will go crazy!).
Why You’ll Love This Little Debbie Christmas Tree Trifle
Most trifle recipes include cake layers, such as angel food cake, trifle sponges, white cake, or lady fingers. But for this Christmas trifle recipe I am using Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes!
Here’s why you’re going to love this Christmas trifle:
- It’s Easy as Pie (or Trifle!): This easy recipe doesn’t take much effort. With store-bought cakes, a little mixing, and some layering, you’ll have a beautiful dessert in no time.
- It Looks Like Christmas: With the colorful fresh berries, cute Christmas Tree Cakes, and sprinkles of edible glitter, this dessert screams Christmas time.
- Layers of Deliciousness: The soft cake pieces, creamy vanilla pudding, and fluffy whipped cream taste amazing together. Add the sliced strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries, and every bite is super delicious.
- Kid-Approved: Kids love the fun look and sweet taste. Plus, there’s no baking required, so it’s great for anyone looking to keep things simple!
- It’s a Showstopper: With Christmas Tree Cakes, a sprinkle of green sanding sugar, and a little drizzle of red icing on the top of the trifle, it looks almost too good to eat. Almost.
Christmas Trifle Ingredients
- Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes: The soft, sweet sponge cake and festive decorations help make this trifle really look like a Chsitmas time treat. Chop them up for the layers and save a few whole ones to decorate the top of the trifle. The little Christmas trees on top make this the perfect holiday dessert!
- Heavy Cream: You’ll whip this into a fluffy whipped cream. It gives the trifle a super creamy texture.
- Cream Cheese: The cream cheese adds richness and a little tang to balance all the sweetness. Mixed with the whipped cream, it creates a silky, delicious layer that’s perfect for this holiday trifle.
- Powdered Sugar: This sweetens up the cream cheese mixture just enough without being overpowering. It also keeps the texture smooth.
- Vanilla Extract: Just a splash adds a nice vanilla flavor to the creamy layers.
- Vanilla Pudding: It adds a smooth texture and sweet vanilla flavor that ties everything together.
- Fresh Strawberries, Blackberries, and Raspberries: The fresh berries bring color, flavor, and a little tartness to balance all the creamy and sweet layers.
- Red Writing Icing (Optional): This is for decorating the top of the trifle to mimic the cute designs on the Christmas Tree Cakes.
- Green Sanding Sugar or Sprinkles (Optional): Sprinkling this on top adds the perfect finishing touch for your holiday table.
- Edible Glitter (Optional): A little edible glitter adds a magical sparkle that makes this delicious dessert feel extra special.
How to Make My Christmas Trifle
Here’s how to make my Little Debbie Christmas Tree Trifle recipe in simple steps:
Chop the Cakes: Cut those cute Christmas Tree Cakes into bite-sized pieces. Keep 2 or 3 whole ones aside for decorating the top of the trifle later.
Wash and Dry Berries: Wash and dry your berries, slicing the strawberries.
Whip the Cream: In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream with an electric mixer until it forms soft peaks. Set it aside for now.
Prepare the Vanilla Pudding: Follow the instructions on the box to prepare the vanilla pudding. Set aside for now.
Make the Cream Cheese Mixture: In another medium bowl, mix the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat until it’s smooth and creamy. Now, gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Be careful not to overmix—it should stay light and fluffy.
Start Layering in the Trifle Bowl: Take your trifle bowl and spread half of the chopped cake cubes at the bottom. Add half the vanilla pudding on top. Next, layer half of your sliced strawberries, then half of the cream cheese mixture. Sprinkle some fresh raspberries and blackberries over that.
Repeat the Layers: Now, repeat everything: another layer of chopped cake cubes, the rest of the pudding, more fresh berries, the rest of the cream cheese mixture. Smooth the top with a spatula to make it pretty.
Add the Decorations: For that festive touch, sprinkle some green sanding sugar and use red writing icing to mimic the designs on the cakes. Place the whole Christmas Tree Cakes you saved earlier on the top of the trifle. If you’re feeling fancy, spray a little edible glitter to make it sparkle.
Chill and Serve: Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and let it chill in the fridge for at least an hour.
Recipe Variations
- Add Chocolate: Swap out the vanilla pudding for chocolate pudding. The rich chocolate flavor pairs beautifully with the sweetness of the Little Debbie Cakes and the tartness of the fresh berries. You can even sprinkle some chocolate chips between the layers.
- Make It Fruity with Jam: Add a thin jam layer of strawberry jelly or raspberry jam between the cake and pudding.
- Create Individual Servings: Instead of a large trifle dish, make individual trifles in Mason jars or small cups. They’re cute, easy to serve, and perfect for a holiday party.
- Extra Toppings: You can add some mini candy canes or colorful Christmas gum drops to the top (kids will love you for it!).
Storing Leftovers
This dessert is best enjoyed the same day. If you save it for the next day, it won’t be as good. But no worries—there pobably won’t be any leftovers!
