Homemade Chocolate Syrup

In my house we always keep a mason jar of Homemade Chocolate Syrup in the fridge.

On warm summer evenings, we’d gather on the porch with bowls of homemade ice cream, and our jar of chocolate syrup.

In the winter months, we would add it to warm milk, or drizzled over warm brownies fresh from the oven.

It wasn’t just a topping—it was a little taste of home, a sweet reminder that the best chocolate syrup doesn’t come from a bottle on a store shelf, but from your own kitchen.

Why You’ll Love Homemade Chocolate Syrup

  • Simple Ingredients: Made with natural ingredients like cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract. No high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors!
  • Better Than Store-Bought: Tastes richer and fresher than Hershey’s syrup or any bottled chocolate sauce you’ll find at the store.
  • Versatile: Perfect for chocolate milk, iced coffee, homemade mochas, drizzled on as an ice cream topping, homemade brownies, or even chocolate cake.

Ingredients for Homemade Chocolate Syrup

  • Cocoa Powder: It’s what gives your chocolate syrup a rich, chocolatey flavor.
  • Hot Water: You’ll mix it with the cocoa powder so it blends nice and smooth.
  • Pinch of Salt: Just a little bit brings out all the chocolate flavor. Without it, the syrup can taste flat.
  • Honey or Maple Syrup: Instead of high fructose corn syrup, we’re using natural ingredients like maple syrup or honey.
  • Vanilla Extract: A splash of homemade vanilla extract gives your homemade syrup a warm, smooth flavor.
  • Mason Jar or Glass Jar: Once your sugar dissolves and the syrup is done, pour it into a mason jar or another airtight container.
  • Pot or Small Saucepan: You’ll need a small saucepan or medium saucepan to cook everything.

How to Make Homemade Chocolate Syrup

  • Add Your Ingredients: Grab a medium saucepan and pour in your cocoa powder, water, pinch of salt, and your sweetener.
  • Whisk Everything Together: Set the pan over medium heat and whisk until it’s nice and smooth. The cocoa powder will dissolve so your chocolate syrup isn’t lumpy.
  • Bring to a Boil, Then Simmer: Let it come to a gentle boil, then turn it down to a simmer. Keep stirring so it doesn’t stick or burn. It will start turning into a thick, rich homemade syrup.
  • Taste and Sweeten: Give it a little taste test. If you want it sweeter (like for chocolate milk), stir in up to another ¼ cup of sweetener. Keep simmering until the honey or maple syrup dissolves and the syrup coats your spoon.
  • Finish with Vanilla: Once it’s done, turn off the heat and stir in your vanilla extract. It gives the homemade syrup a smooth, warm flavor.
  • Cool and Store: Carefully pour the syrup into a mason jar or glass jar. Let it cool to room temperature first, then close it and store in the fridge.

Ways to Serve Homemade Chocolate Syrup

  • Stir into warm milk for a cup of hot chocolate.
  • Drizzle over ice cream for an easy dessert topping.
  • Swirl into iced coffee or a homemade mocha for a sweet pick-me-up.
  • Pour over homemade brownies or a slice of chocolate cake.
  • Use as a dip for fresh fruit like strawberries or bananas.
  • Mix into chocolate milk for a treat the kids (and grown-ups) will love.

How to Store Leftovers

To keep your own homemade chocolate syrup fresh, pour it into an airtight container like a clean mason jar or glass jar.

Let it cool to room temperature before sealing so it doesn’t sweat inside the jar. Store it in the fridge, and it’ll stay good for about two weeks.

Make sure to give it a good shake before using.
