Ingredients for Hot Chocolate Bombs

  • Milk Chocolate Chips: They melt down beautifully and create the smooth, shiny outer shell that holds all the goodies inside. You’ll need them to coat your silicone mold and form the perfect chocolate sphere.
  • Packets of Hot Cocoa Mix: Use your favorite hot cocoa mix to fill the inside of your bombs.
  • Mini Marshmallows: These little guys add so much fun! They pop out when the bomb opens and melt into your hot milk, making it extra creamy and sweet. No hot chocolate is complete without them!

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

I might be biased, but I think these are really the best hot chocolate bombs! Some recipes use the double boiler method and different techniques that are more work.

I am all about easy here! So, easy it is. Here’s what you need to do:

Melt the Chocolate Chips: Start by putting your milk chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave them in 15 to 30-second intervals, stirring each time, until you have smooth, melted chocolate. This will be the base for your hollow chocolate spheres.

Coat the Silicone Mold: Using the back of a spoon, spread the melted chocolate evenly over each cavity of your silicone mold. Make sure the layer is thick enough to hold its shape. Give the mold a little bounce on the counter to smooth out the chocolate. Pop the mold in the freezer for about 10 minutes, until the chocolate is solid.

Add a Second Coat: Take the mold out of the freezer and add a second coat of chocolate. This makes the shells sturdier and ensures they won’t crack. Freeze again until fully set.

Hot Chocolate Bombs steps

Remove and Smooth the Edges: Gently pop the chocolate shells out of the molds. Heat a microwave-safe plate for a few seconds, and carefully rub the edges of each shell on the warm plate to even them out.

Fill the Bombs: Take half of the shells and fill each one with hot chocolate powder, a handful of mini marshmallows, and some of holiday sprinkles.

Seal the Bombs: Grab another shell, smooth the edge on the warm plate, and gently press it onto a filled shell to close the bomb. The melted edges will seal them together. Pop them back in the freezer for a few minutes to set.

Hot Chocolate Bombs steps

Decorate the Bombs: Melt your white chocolate chips and pour them into a piping bag or a plastic bag with the tip snipped off. Drizzle the melted chocolate over each bomb, then add more holiday sprinkles on top. Let them sit until the drizzle hardens.

Serve & Enjoy: To serve, place a bomb in the bottom of your favorite mug. Pour hot milk over the top and watch it burst open, revealing all the goodies inside. Stir well for a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

Decorating Hot Cocoa Bombs

I keep it pretty simple with just a drizzle of white chocolate over each of the hot cocoa bombs, but there are other ways you could decorate them—just use your imagination!

  • Classic Sprinkle Bombs: After drizzling the white chocolate, sprinkle colorful holiday sprinkles on top while the drizzle is still wet.
  • Candy Cane Crunch: Crush up candy canes or peppermint candies and sprinkle them over the drizzle.
  • Glitter: Use edible glitter or shimmer dust to give your bombs a sparkly, colorful touch.
  • S’mores Style: After drizzling, sprinkle crushed graham crackers and add a few mini marshmallows on top.
  • Drizzles: Use different colors of chocolate for drizzling—dark, milk, white, or even colored candy melts.
  • Caramel Sauce: Swap the white chocolate drizzle for melted caramel sauce, and sprinkle a tiny pinch of sea salt on top.

Recipe Tips

  • For best results, always use quality chocolate so your cup of hot cocoa is unforgettable.
  • This recipe makes a wonderful gift box idea for any chocolate lover, or you can keep them all to yourself!
  • If you’re gifting them, wrap each bomb in plastic wrap or tuck them into a box with a little love.
  • You can use any type of hot milk when making this hot chocolate bomb recipe: whole milk, almond milk, or oat milk, or your favorite hot liquid.

How to Store Hot Cocoa Bombs

To store your hot chocolate bombs, place them in an airtight container to keep them fresh and prevent moisture from ruining the chocolate.

Keep the container in a cool, dry place, like a pantry or cabinet, away from heat and sunlight, as this can cause the chocolate to melt.

If your kitchen is warm, you can store them in the fridge, but let them come to room temperature before using to avoid condensation. Properly stored, they’ll stay fresh for up to 2 weeks!

Hot Chocolate Bombs

Equipment

  • Hot Cocoa Bomb Molds
  • Spoon
  • parchment paper
  • Piping Bag
  • Gloves
  • Warm Milk Mug

Ingredients

  • 2 11.5 oz. Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 6 packets of Hot Cocoa Mix
  • ½ cup of Mini Marshmallows
  • 1/4 a cup of Holiday Sprinkles
  • 1 cup of White Chocolate Chips

Instructions

  • Start by melting down your milk chocolate chips. Microwave in one minute intervals, stirring after each, until your chips are melted and smooth.
  • It helps to cut your molds into single individual molds with a pair of scissors, but not necessary.
  • Using the backside of a spoon, coat each mold completely in chocolate. Gently bounce off the counter to make it smooth.
  • Place in the freezer for about 10 minutes until solid and set. Remove from the freezer and coat each mold in another layer of chocolate. You want a thick coating.
  • Once chocolate is set, remove from the molds. Set on a plate and place back in the freezer. You want to work with them one at a time and keep them chilled.
  • Put on your gloves. I place mine in the fridge to keep them chilled. Heat up a plate in the microwave. Make sure it’s microwave safe!
  • Take one mold out and rub the rim on the hot plate, just until it’s even. Flip over and fill with one packet of hot chocolate, several mini marshmallows, and sprinkles. Take another mold out of the freezer. Rub it on a hot plate to melt the rim, and gently set on top of your hot cocoa filled mold. Gently closing them together. Place back in the freezer until you are ready to decorate. Repeat with all molds.
  • Melt down your white chocolate chips and pour into a piping bag. Cut off a small tip. Drizzle each hot cocoa bomb with white chocolate and top with additional sprinkles.
  • Once chocolate is set, they are ready to serve. Gently placed in the bottom of a mug. Pour warm milk over your hot cocoa bomb until your mug is full. Wait a few seconds and it will explode. Stir and enjoy! So fun for those winter nights.
